Description of the area

Canary Islands

Surrounded by the cool blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Canary Islands show off all their magic in an archipelago unique in the world for its diversity and subtropical beauty; an entire universe that you can enjoy in a spring-like climate which lasts twelve months a year.

The Canaries: Seven islands... seven worlds. El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, all of which are truly spectacular and at the same time very different from one another, seduce the visitor with an exceptional range of tourism options among which you will find the best accommodation and top quality leisure and cultural activities.

Immense white dunes and crystal-clear waters, lunar landscapes, forests, secret bays with brilliant black sand, volcanoes, broad golden-sandy beaches and all the flavour of little villages that have managed to hold on to their historical and cultural heritage with deep-rooted popular fiestas and gastronomy that is as simple as it is exquisite.

But the Canaries are also the perfect place to get close to nature in a more active way: trekking, para-gliding, sailing and water sports, golf, 365 days a year in which to enjoy just what you like a hundred percent. On the Canary Islands, you will have your best-ever holiday and you will discover an exotic location that is at the same time close in proximity and safe, with all the comforts of a European destination.

The Canary Islands are considered the southernmost part of Europe. They are located at a distance of 100 kilometres from the West African coast between the subtropical and temperate zones.

The annual average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius in the archipelago, which has a total surface area of 7,446 square kilometres and a little more than 1,700,000 inhabitants spread over its seven islands.

Spain

Spain or the Kingdom of Spain is a country located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. With an area of 504,030 km², Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe after France.

Because of its location, Spain has been subject to many external influences, often simultaneously, since prehistoric times. At times the country itself has been an important source of influence to other regions. Archaeological and genetic evidence strongly suggests that the Iberian Peninsula acted as one of three major refugia from which northern Europe was repopulated following the end of the last ice age. It has also played an important part in Europe and even the world at certain historic times; in the latter case when it was the seat of a global empire that has left a legacy of 400 million Spanish speakers today. The combination of external influences with the interactions of the culturally and politically differentiated regions of the rugged peninsula has produced a dramatic history, typified by alternating periods of unity and disunity under very different regimes.

Spain is a democracy organised in the form of a parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy. It is a developed country with the eighth largest economy in the world based on nominal GDP. It is a member of the European Union and NATO.
